Fire TV Developer Options Missing or Greyed Out (2026 UK Fix)

If you opened Settings on a newer Firestick and could not find Developer Options — or the entry is there but greyed out, or Install Unknown Apps shows an empty list — you are not missing a hidden step. Amazon changed how developer tools are exposed in Fire OS 8, and then removed sideloading altogether on the Vega OS devices shipping from July 2026. This guide explains which change affects which model, and what still works in 2026.

What Amazon changed

Two separate changes are being confused as one problem:

• Fire OS 7 → Fire OS 8: the Developer Options submenu is no longer visible by default. You have to unhide it with the seven-tap trick (below) before it appears.
• Fire OS 11 → Vega OS (July 2026 devices onwards): sideloading has been removed from the platform entirely. Vega OS Fire TV Sticks cannot install APKs at all, whether from Downloader or a USB stick. Developer Options is not hidden — it is gone.

The first is a settings change you can reverse. The second is a hardware/platform decision you cannot. Which one you are hitting depends entirely on which stick you own.

Step 1 — Check which OS your stick runs

1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings → My Fire TV → About.
2. Note the Device and the Software version.
3. Match against the table below. Anything on Fire OS 8 to Fire OS 11 uses the seven-tap trick. Anything on Vega OS cannot sideload.

Step 2 — The seven-tap unlock (Fire OS 8–11)

1. Open Settings → My Fire TV → About.
2. Highlight (do not open) the device name at the top of the About list.
3. Press the Select (centre) button on the remote seven times in a row, at roughly one press per second.
4. A small message will confirm you are now a developer. Go back one step to My Fire TV and Developer Options will now be visible.
5. Inside it, enable Install unknown apps and, for the specific app you plan to sideload from (usually Downloader), toggle its switch on.

If the seven-tap does nothing, you are almost certainly on a Vega OS device — jump to the next section.

Vega OS devices — sideloading has been removed

On the Fire TV Stick models Amazon began shipping in July 2026 with Vega OS, there is no path to sideload third-party APKs. Downloader is not in the Vega OS App Store, and the seven-tap trick does not surface a Developer Options menu because the underlying capability has been removed rather than hidden. What you can still do on Vega OS: use any app that is available in the Vega OS App Store natively, cast from a phone or laptop via built-in casting, or fall back to a Smart TV app where the platform allows it. What you cannot do: install TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, Kodi, or any other app that is not in the official Vega store.

Which Fire TV Sticks still support sideloading in 2026

• Fire TV Stick Lite, HD, 4K, 4K Max (pre-July 2026 units): Fire OS — seven-tap unlock still works, sideloading via Downloader still works.
• Fire TV Cube (Gen 2, Gen 3): Fire OS — sideloading works.
• Fire TV Stick 4K Max (Vega OS units shipping from July 2026): no sideloading, no Developer Options.
• Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2026): Vega OS — no sideloading.

Not sure which unit you bought? Amazon UK started the Vega OS rollout in July 2026 — sticks purchased before that date are Fire OS regardless of model. If Developer Options is visible but greyed out

On Fire OS, if the menu appears but toggles are disabled, the usual cause is a Kids Profile or restricted profile being active. Switch back to the primary Adult profile from the home screen top-right avatar, then reopen Settings. On managed accounts (rare in a UK household but common if the stick was gifted from a company Amazon account), the account owner may have disabled developer features remotely — the account owner has to re-enable them.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I no longer see Developer Options on my Firestick?

Fire OS 8 and later hide it by default. Highlight the device name at the top of Settings → My Fire TV → About and press Select seven times to bring it back. On Vega OS devices, it has been removed entirely — the trick will not work.

Does the seven-tap trick still work in 2026?

Yes on Fire OS 8, 9, 10 and 11 devices. No on Vega OS devices from July 2026 onwards — those cannot be unlocked to sideload at all.

How do I check whether my Firestick is Fire OS or Vega OS?

Open Settings → My Fire TV → About. Fire OS sticks show a version like “Fire OS 8.x” or “Fire OS 11.x”. Vega OS sticks show “Vega OS” as the platform name. Anything bought new from Amazon UK before July 2026 is Fire OS.

Can I install Downloader on a Vega OS Fire TV Stick?

No. Downloader relies on Fire OS sideloading, which Vega OS has removed. There is currently no supported workaround. If sideloading matters to you, buy a Fire OS unit while stock lasts, or choose a different platform.
